This page explains how you can register for our iris recognition immigration system (IRIS). You should also read Can I register for IRIS? to find out if you qualify to use this system. For information about what IRIS is, see Iris recognition immigration system (IRIS).
Registration for IRIS is voluntary and free of charge. The process takes about five to 10 minutes and is done when you are departing the United Kingdom, after you have passed through the border and security controls.
To register, you will need your valid passport or travel document, which confirms your immigration status, and your boarding card. You do not have to complete an application form.
We may ask you questions about your immigration status, and how often you travel to or from the United Kingdom, to check that you qualify to register for IRIS (see Can I register for IRIS? for more information on these requirements).
If you meet the requirements we will take photographs of your face and your iris patterns and store them in our secure database.
All the data we collect will be treated as confidential and used in keeping with our obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998. For more information about how we will store and use the data, see our leaflet Information for passengers enrolled on the IRIS scheme (PDF 97K opens in new window).
Iris recognition uses standard video camera technology to take a photograph of your eye. It does not use scanners, lasers, or bright or strobe lights, so there are no risks involved. It does not touch your face or eyes, and takes the photograph from a comfortable distance.
