Online applications for Tier 2 and Tier 5 in the UK
13 February 2012
From today, migrant workers under Tiers 2 and 5 of the points-based system can apply and pay their application fees online if they are already in the UK.
The new online application system is also available to these workers' dependants who are in the UK and seeking permission to extend their stay (known as 'further leave to remain').
Applicants can use the online system to complete and submit their application, pay their application fee and (if they want to use our 'premium service') book an appointment at a public enquiry office.
Do you need to apply online?
No, it is not compulsory to make your application online. You can still download and complete a paper application form.
How can you apply online?
You can make an online application by following one of the links on the right side of this page. However, you should read the relevant information for your immigration category in the Skilled workers or Temporary workers section of this website first.
When you arrive at the application page, select 'Apply online' at the bottom of the page. This will take you to the 'Registering a customer account' screen. When you have registered, you will begin your application.
Can you check your application before you submit it online?
If Adobe Acrobat is installed on your computer, you can open your application form to review your answers at any point before you submit the application. Select 'My account' in the top right corner of the page, then select 'View application'. You can then review it on screen or print a copy.
When you complete your application, you must check that it is complete by selecting 'Check application'. This will review all the sections of the application and highlight any errors. You must correct these errors before you can submit your application.
Your application date will be the date when you submit your online application and pay your application fee online.
You will not need to pay a different fee if the application fee changes before you submit your supporting documents or enrol your biometric information (fingerprints and facial photograph).
After you have submitted your application
When you have submitted and paid for your application online, an on-screen message will confirm this and tell you what to do next. We will also send an email to the address that you have provided on the 'Payment details' page, confirming payment of the application fee.
Your application will not become valid until you have supplied your supporting documents and enrolled your biometric information (see below).
When we have decided your application, we will send you a letter telling you our decision.
Supporting documents and biometric information
When you have answered all the questions in the application, you will be asked whether you want to use our 'standard' or 'premium' service.
If you choose the standard service, you must send your supporting documents to us by post within 15 working days of your application date. When we have received these documents, we will send you a letter inviting you to enrol your biometric information - see the Enrolling your biometric information (postal applications) section. You must do this by the date stated on the letter.
If you choose the premium service, you can book your appointment at a public enquiry office as part of your online application. The appointment must take place within 45 working days of your application date. When you attend your appointment, you will enrol your biometric information and submit your supporting documents. See the Applying in person section for more information.
When you have supplied your supporting documents and enrolled your biometric information, your application will become valid.
How can your dependants apply?
If your dependants are applying at the same time as you are, they do not need to create a separate customer account or submit a separate application. You will be asked in your online application whether you are including any dependants in your application - if you are, you will be asked questions within your own application for each dependant.
If your dependants are making an application after you, they must open their own customer account and select a Tier 2 or Tier 5 application (depending on your immigration category). When they are asked 'What are you applying for?' as part of their application, they should select 'Points Based System Dependant'.
If you experience technical problems while completing or submitting an online application, you can contact our Apply online e-Support team.
Do not use this email address to request immigration advice, book an appointment or ask for information about the progress of your application. For immigration enquiries, contact our immigration enquiry bureau.
Previous addresses in the UK
During your online application, you will be asked to state your previous address in the UK. If you have only lived at 1 UK address in the last 5 years, you should restate your current UK address and the period that you have lived there.
English language requirement
If you need to provide evidence of an English language test to support your application, please check the evidence specified in our List of approved English language test providers (PDF 346KB opens in a new window). The list of documents in the online application may not include all of the evidence that we need to verify some tests, so we recommend that you check the list in the PDF before you submit your application, and include all evidence and documentation requested.
