This page gives general guidance on completing application form NTLTOC to transfer a residence permit (known as 'leave to remain') from an old passport to a new one. You can download the form from the right side of this page.
You should also read the detailed guidance (NTLTOC guidance, which you can download from the right side of this page) before completing the form. You will need to pay a fee when you make your application. We will not refund your fee if we refuse your application or you withdraw it.
You do not need to transfer your residence permit to your new passport but may do so if you wish. You should read Transfer your visa to a new passport for more details.
You should use this form if you already have indefinite leave to remain or limited leave to remain in the United Kingdom and wish to have the stamp confirming this transferred from an old passport or travel document to a new one. You must be in the United Kingdom to apply.
There is one fee for each application form. You can use one form for a joint application by you; your husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried or same-sex partner; and children aged under 18, if they are applying as your dependants. Children over 18 must apply separately.
You should not use this form if you have become naturalised as a British citizen since being granted permanent residence in the United Kingdom. If this is the case, you have the right of abode in the United Kingdom and are no longer subject to immigration control. If you have also kept your other nationality and wish your British status to be confirmed in that passport, you should apply for a certificate of entitlement to right of abode. See Who has the right to live in the United Kingdom? for details of this.
If you are applying for a stamp confirming permanent residence status (no time limit stamp), you may apply at any time while you have indefinite leave to enter or remain.
If you have limited leave to remain, and wish to have those conditions transferred to a new passport, you must apply at least four weeks before the end of your authorised stay in the United Kingdom. We will not confirm your permission to stay in another passport once it has already run out. In that situation we will not refund your fee and you will have to apply for further permission to stay in the United Kingdom.
You can post your application to us, or apply in person. See Contact for addresses and details of how to do this. You need to make an appointment in advance to apply in person. It is a same-day service available at a premium fee and is only suitable for straightforward applications that will not require further enquiries.
We cannot tell in advance how long it will take to decide your postal application so you should not make non-urgent travel plans until we have returned your passport to you. However, our current target times for deciding applications show how quickly we aim to make a decision.
Ensure you apply using the current version of the form. You must fill in the form in block capitals using a black pen. Please enter all dates as dd-mm-yyyy, for example 29-04-2000.
