Overseas qualified nurses and midwives

Switching

This page explains whether you can switch to the overseas qualified nurse or midwife category if you are already in the United Kingdom.

If you do not meet the requirements on this page, you will need to leave the United Kingdom to make an application for entry clearance as an overseas qualified nurse or midwife. Details of how to make an entry clearance application can be found on the applying page.

Requirements to switch

You will only be able to switch to the overseas qualified nurse or midwife category if you:

  • meet all the eligibility requirements for the overseas qualified nurse or midwife category; and
  • currently have leave to remain in the United Kingdom as:
    • a student; or
    • a prospective student; or
    • a student nurse; or
    • a work permit holder; or
    • working holidaymaker who has been in the United Kingdom at least 12 months.

Applying for leave to remain as an overseas qualified nurse or midwife

If you meet the requirements above you can apply to extend your stay in the United Kingdom as an overseas qualified nurse or midwife. You should make your application to extend your stay (we call this applying for further leave to remain) on application form FLR(O). This application form and the related guidance can be downloaded from the right side of this page.

Further information on how to complete the application form and the cost of making an application is available from the UK residency section.
