This section explains our planned policy for the sports people category within Tier 2 - skilled worker of our points-based system. The information is based on our statement of intent published on 6 May 2008. The information in this section will be updated as we continue to develop the policy over the next few months.
The information in this section relates to the eligibility requirements and application process for the sports people sub-category of Tier 2. If you want to apply under the ministers of religion sub-category or the main Tier 2 - skilled workers arrangements, you should see the relevant section for more information.
The sports people category allows you to come to the United Kingdom as an elite sports person or coach if you intend to base yourself in the United Kingdom, are internationally established at the highest level, and your employment will make a significant contribution to the development of your sport at the highest level in the United Kingdom.
This category will replace the existing work permit arrangements for sportspeople.
If you would like to enter the United Kingdom under this category you will need to obtain entry clearance and show that you have scored enough points to qualify, see Eligibility section.
Applications for entry clearance must be made from outside the United Kingdom. You should make your application at the British diplomatic post in the country in which you are ordinarily resident in. Applications for entry clearance are processed by our visa services team. Our visa services website will provide more information on the application process when Tier 2 is introduced in autumn 2008.
