Extending

This page explains whether you can apply to extend your stay in the United Kingdom under the youth mobility scheme within Tier 5 of the points-based system. The information is based on our statements of intent published on 6 May 2008. The information in this section will be updated as we continue to develop the policy over the next few months.

Tier 5 is a short-term immigration category. If you come to the United Kingdom under the youth mobility scheme, you will be given permission to stay for a maximum of 24 months. You will not be able to apply to extend your stay.

Tier 5 does not provide a route to remain in the United Kingdom permanently. You will be expected to leave the United Kingdom when your permission to stay ends. You will not be able to switch into a different immigration category without leaving the United Kingdom.
